Modern-Day Dinosaurs Workshop

From feathers, eggs, nests, and scaly feet, to chirps, powerful claws and hunting, you'll be amazed by the traits birds share with their ancient ancestors.

Did you know that birds are the only living dinosaurs left on Earth?

Join our fascinating Modern-Day Dinosaurs workshop and become a junior palaeontologist for the day as you uncover the incredible story of how dinosaurs evolved into the birds we see around us today.

This activity is part of our new Meet The Birds Time Forgot event.

Don a lab coat and examine life-sized replica fossils of bones, eggs, footprints, and other clues that help scientists understand the remarkable connection between prehistoric dinosaurs and modern birds.

Through engaging activities and discussion, discover why scientists believe many dinosaurs had feathers, how they cared for their eggs and young, and why wetlands have always been important habitats for both dinosaurs and birds.

What will you investigate?

You'll get hands-on with a range of fascinating specimens and activities, including:

  • Comparing a replica fossilised Tyrannosaurus rex egg with a duck egg
  • Examining replica fossils of iconic species including Archaeopteryx and Velociraptor
  • Investigating the famous footprints of Megalosaurus
  • Discovering how feathers first evolved and what they were used for
  • Learning how dinosaurs built nests and raised their young, just like birds today
  • Exploring how hunting behaviours seen in dinosaurs can still be spotted in our wetland birds
