With the weather gradually cooling down and getting wetter, the increasingly rare patches of sunshine are helping the last of the dragonflies still on the wing. A few Migrant Hawkers were along the South Finger Walkway this morning, including the individual in the photo above at the Kingfisher Hide.
Kingfisher Hide
A Water Rail was calling from the reedbed this morning with another vocal bird in the reedbed nearer the Zeiss Hide and a third in the South Finger Reedbed. These elusive birds are likely to be all over the reserve but only known when they let out their pig-like squeal. At least 15 Ruff and 12 Curlew were feeding in field with the Lapwing flock in Bottom New Piece field along with 212 Barnacle Geese.
Zeiss Hide
A single Black-tailed Godwit was on the scrape this morning along with 15 Snipe along the shoreline. A Curlew Sandpiper was in with 130 Dunlin and also noted were a Ruff, 3 Redshank, 48 Wigeon, 10 Shoveler, 1000+ Teal and 5 Swallow over Dumbles.
South Lake
At least 27 Knot were nestled in with the 348 strong Black-tailed Godwit flock, along with a single Redshank. Two drake Pochard on deep lake.
