Signs of spring

Lesser celandine

More signs of spring are evident this week at WWT Welney.  The first few plants are bursting into flower.  With coltsfoot, germander speedwell and lesser celandine some of the first to emerge.  It was thought in days gone by that lesser celandine heralded the return of swallows to the UK, which won't be long now.

The first insects are also evident this week with sightings of white-tailed bumblebee.  It is definitely worth taking a leisurely stroll to the hides when you visit as you then have time to spot butterflies, caterpillars and bees in amongst the plants.
